Catching Up With CAT: Expanding Our Definitions of Success
Last week we did a lot of rock climbing at Steelworkers Park. I learned a lot about staying diligent and improved my belaying skills.
Because it was so hot, we had to make sure we were taking breaks, drinking water, and staying in the shade. It was hard to stay motivated and energetic when it is so hot, so I had to push myself. Staying focused is super important to focus on safety and ensure I am checking all the participants.
One thing that I noticed is that success looks different for different people. Some of the participants were scared of heights and didn’t want to climb. For them, success is getting off the ground or cheering on their friends. Even if I am not the best climber, I can still define my success as being supportive and encouraging.
I also think it’s important to push people to test their limits, but not too far that it’s not fun anymore. I tried to encourage people to try their hardest and do things they haven’t done before, but if they don’t want to, that’s also okay. The most important thing is that people are safe and having fun!
