Catching Up With CAT: United in Devil’s Lake
There are many barriers that keep people from under-represented communities from becoming climbers: cost, transportation, time, lack of representation, prejudice, and not having access to skilled teachers or a supportive network. That is why this festival matters. By creating a low-cost event (with over half of the attendees receiving full scholarships) in an inclusive and welcoming space, we’re helping these climbers take that next step in their journey, together.

CAT is more than an organization to me. It is a family. Everyone effortlessly connects with each other and cultivates a space where it is okay to be yourself; a space where everyone is met where they are at and not judged by their past or present; a place where graduations, births, new homes, new jobs, and more are celebrated; and a place where struggles are acknowledged and help is available if desired.

Personally, I've undergone a transformative experience, confronting and conquering challenges I hadn't imagined. As someone who once dreaded new interactions, CAT's programming has pushed me beyond my comfort zone, teaching me to connect with people in ways I never thought possible. I can now hold a conversation within programs with much greater ease than I ever thought possible. CAT is a place where growth is encouraged, and our team continues to create opportunities for participants to evolve and transform.

Not only is my leadership at CAT an inspiration to young people in my community who rarely see people who lok like them reflected in outdoor adventures, but it is alsp a prt of changing the face of leadership in the larger adventure therapy community.
